When developing public health campaigns, health education programs, related initiatives, or working with patients one-on-one, EDS Wellness focuses on the seven dimensions of wellness. We help individuals, families, caregivers and medical professionals understand the importance of incorporating all aspects of wellness into the integrative healthcare plan for an individual living with a type of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD), Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or other chronic medical condition. While a specific provider may focus on one dimension of wellness, EDS Wellness brings together information from each provider who is part of a patient’s healthcare team and incorporates all dimensions of wellness into “coaching” a patient through the journey to improving their overall health and well-being.

One way of helping patients understand how to incorporate the 7 dimensions of Wellness into their lives, is by creating S.M.A.R.T Goals. S.M.A.R.T goals are an interactive and empowering tool that help facilitate an individual’s understanding of the role he/she personally plays in their health and overall well-being, areas that he/she may need to seek professional help, and establishes measurable and attainable health and wellness goals. The seven dimensions of wellness and setting S.M.A.R.T. goals are resources applicable to those living with or without a chronic illness. S.M.A.R.T goals can also be applied to any situation, all levels of health, and no matter where an individual may stand on he/her wellness journey.

What does each of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness stand for? 
  • Physical wellness involves physical activity to build endurance, flexibility, strength and fitness. It can be achieved through regular exercise, proper diet, and nutrition, sleep and rest as well as avoidance of tobacco use, drug abuse, and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Intellectual wellness involves putting one’s intelligence to its best possible use. It requires learning, problem-solving and creative pursuits as well as reading, writing and other mentally- stimulating and challenging activities.
  • Emotional wellness focuses on how one feels, thinks and co with life. It can affect one’s ability to deal with normal life stressors, relationships with others, job/school satisfaction, and success as well as the quality of life and happiness.
  • Spiritual wellness is about finding meaning and purpose in life. It involves mindfulness as well as appreciation and acceptance of life. Spiritual wellness can be experienced and achieved through meditation, religion, music, art, literature, nature and connections with loved ones and other people in the community.
  • Occupational wellness is about having work that can offer personal meaning, purpose, and satisfaction. An important aspect of occupational wellness is finding a healthy balance between school/work and leisure. A particular focus is on the work or school environment and how you can create a workplace that is free from stress and allows for overall satisfaction.
  • Social wellness is about having satisfactory interpersonal relationships and positive interactions with others. It involves learning social skills to develop a good support system and deep, meaningful relationships. Having excellent communication and listening skills, practicing empathy and compassion as well as caring for others can lead to more satisfying and meaningful relationships. In turn, this can promote better health and wellness.
  • Environmental wellness involves living in harmony with the Earth by understanding your impact on the natural world and your personal surroundings. It also includes taking action to protect and heal the world around you. When you lead a lifestyle that is respectful to the environment, you lead a lifestyle that is respectful to yourself! Minimize exposure and production of harmful elements; common environmental threats include carbon dioxide production, air pollution, ultra- violet radiation in the sunlight, chemicals, noise, water pollution, and second-hand smoke.

A good exercise is to think of 2 personal goals for each of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness. It’s important to write them down and ensure that they are measurable (ie. you can track how you are doing), and are stored in a place that is easily accessible, readable, and where you can expand upon them when necessary.
