A Message

From Our Executive Director & Founder

"I couldn't be more thrilled to have the EDS Wellness site back up. While it's still a work in progress and there's still a lot left to be done, we will be forever grateful for the $1000 grant we received earlier this month as part of a charitable fund donation from an amazing donor.

This.has.never.happened!

How incredibly exciting to receive a gift so significant - and at just the time we needed it most! Thank you doesn't seem to express our incredible gratitude for receiving such a substantial contribution & grant for EDS Wellness' “area of most need."

What is the Beighton Score?

The Beighton Score is a clinical tool to assess Generalized Joint Hypermobility (GJH).

The Beighton Score has been used for many years as an indicator of joint hypermobility syndrome. The Beighton Score can quickly and easily assess generalized joint hypermobility using a 9-point scale. It is used solely as a clinical resource and screening tool. Joints included are the thumb, spine, elbow, knee, and the base of the pinky finger. If needed, a goniometer can also be used to measure a joint’s angle to determine its range of motion.

Why Hypermobility Matters

Stats & Facts:

10% of Population Hypermobility
Estimated 1/500 EDS/JHS combined (HSD/hEDS 2017 Classification – 2019 UK – https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/11/e031365)
Large Gender Difference – 70% Female
8.5y delay to the average age of dx between women & men
Delayed dx in children is linked to trauma, misdiagnosis, abuse and disease progression
Early Diagnosis is Critical – Prevention, Comorbid Conditions Presentation, & long-term management
Genetics:

Hypermobility stems from the genetics of our connective tissues — i.e. how our bodies are built according to DNA. And …. connective tissue is e-v-e-r–y-w-h-e-r-e.  It’s the “glue” that holds our bodies together. Hypermobility can also be acquired. Overuse, overstretching, medication reactions, environmental triggers, and several types of auto-immune diseases can also play a role in the “hyperlaxity” of someone’s joints — and all are commonly associated with connective tissue inflammation, pain, and weakness.

EDS Wellness is a premier global nonprofit organization on a mission to help those living hypermobility disorders & related conditions restore function & live well.
